AFF in Review

So it’s been a big week for the Atlantic Film Festival (AFF) and the Hype team has done its best to get to as many screenings as we could with things like work, birthdays and Vegas vacations in the mix (hope you’re having fun, mg!).

Collectively we’ve attended Charlie Zone, Bringing Up Bobby, Atlantic Shorts 1 & 4 (shout out to the short film about Gordon Pinsent!) thus far.

So this week we’ve decided to shine a light on a fabulous and engaging local film that premièred last weekend at the Oxford Theatre – Charlie Zone. Director Michael Melski’s second feature film is a dark and gritty drama that is set in Halifax. The film is about a has-been Aboriginal boxer who is approached by a mysterious woman to rescue an anonymous family’s adopted daughter from a heroine den in Halifax’s North End.

Depicting a dismal and grim side of Halifax that you don’t often find in the public sphere, this film did an amazing job at keeping us engaged and on the edge of our seats throughout the entire screening.

While there are only a few days left of AFF, there is still time to catch some of the great films. We’ve got big plans to take in Roller Town (an encore presentation), Terri and Bellflower before the festivities round out on September 25. We’ll also be celebrating with everyone at the closing gala…will you?

Meanwhile, if you’re not busy with all the AFF fun, here are more suggestions for the weekend:

Rock the water from 9:30 p.m. – 12:30 a.m. with Murphy’s and The Bounce Party Boat. Club beats, drink specials + a discount for people with a valid student ID.

Pardi Gras is on tap for tonight, folks. A Mardi Grad themed party at Alderney Landing from 7-11 p.m. The after party is at the Pogue Fado where you can find a live band and the one and only, DJ Dollar!  Tickets are $15 and the after “Pardi” includes VIP and free cover to the Pogue Fado. Proceeds from this event will be donated to the SPCA.

If you haven’t checked out the Carletone’s at the Carleton on Saturday nights yet, you better get to it. $5 gets you great entertainment in a great venue. Enjoy!
